Brutalism was supposed to be over. Too heavy, too cold, too honest. And yet, walk into any studio worth its reputation this year and you'll find raw concrete, a single sculptural chair, and a window placed with almost religious intent.
Subtraction as a method
The new brutalists aren't interested in monuments. They're interested in removal. Take away the trim, the paint, the ornament — and what remains is material and light, in conversation.
One window, one hour
The best room we visited had one opening. At 4:12 p.m. in late September, the sun aligns with it exactly, and a blade of light crosses the floor for eleven minutes. The architect designed the entire house around those eleven minutes.
"Light is the only material that's free. Everything else is a negotiation."
Designing for the screen
The lessons translate. Fewer elements, more contrast, deliberate motion. Let one thing glow. Let the rest be quiet.
