Forty-two stairs down, the noise of the street disappears. The room holds sixty people if nobody breathes too hard. There is one spotlight, and it belongs to whoever is playing.
The rule of the room
No phones. No talking during solos. Applause whenever you feel it. These rules aren't posted anywhere — the room teaches them to you in the first five minutes.
Call and response
Tonight's quartet doesn't use a setlist. The saxophonist plays four bars, the pianist answers, the drummer argues. It's a conversation in a language most of us understand without ever having learned it.
"Jazz is the sound of people listening to each other. That's rarer than it should be."
Last set
At 1 a.m. the bandleader dims the spotlight to almost nothing and plays a ballad nearly in the dark. Nobody moves. Nobody needs to.
